Hi

CAT does not require hi-fi mathematical understanding. It has been devised to test the basic concepts of students. The book you are following makes perfect sense, but it is recommended that you practice a lot. Somethings you can do for that are:

1. Get hold of some second hand material.
2. Share material with your friends and use their's
3. You can get some free material online at www.mymbaprep.com

For CAT preparation you must always assess your preparation levels. It is a must to join a Test series so that you are aware of how good you are viz-a-viz your other competitors. It also is a platform to find out your weak areas on which you can work on.

Hope it helps.

Hi

Reading books at this stage is fine because it will help you improve your basics. But if you are looking forward to an improvement in your scores, then for sure practice is the only remedy. Many of these books will teach you methods which you eventually might never need at all.

So, I think right now, what you can try doing is do a lot of practice papers and sectional tests. Then figure out which topics are you not comfortable with and read only those topics from the book.

Best of luck for your preparation. Do post back back in case of any doubts.

Hi Nidhi,

As suggested by my fellow friends,it's make perfect sense to follow a book to get the basics right.
But you need to do more than that..which is the practice area.Try to give lot of full length tests with strict timelines. With time constraints you will get to know how you preform under pressure? Then you can work on your weak sections and bring them to a comfortable level.
Keep in mind that you need to keep all the three sections to a equally good level.
Feel free to ask any doubt. Also go through the blogs of mentors who have cleared the CAT.Their experience and views on CAT might also give you some inspiration.

Hi Nidhi

I think my friends have told you most of the things that a person should do at this stage to improve his /her quant, but I would like to add one more thing, which I personally feels helps a lot .

When you are giving a test ( Time bounded ) then its thorough after analysis is very important . One should not give another test until n unless one is thorough with the analysis of the previous one . It will benefit you in two ways . Firstly , you will come to know where you are commiting most of the mistakes in quant ( i.e while doing small calculations or because basics are not up to mark ) . Secondly when you try to do the analysis , don't look the solutions directly . Try to solve the remaining ques that you were not able to solve earlier ( during the test ) and see in how much time you are able to solve them . Then compare the approach you followed for solving that particular ques and the approach given in the solution set . This way over the time your speed and approach both will improve .

There is one more advice , whenever you are doing quant , try to do the calculations mentally rather than with pen & paper . It takes time to do that , but it will help you save lot of your time on your D-day .

Best of Luck for your exam !!
